Donald W. Ickstadt, age 86 of Eau Claire died Thursday, September 26, 2013 in Chippewa Falls.

He was born January 15, 1927 in Chippewa Falls to Arthur Sr. and Louise (Krenz) Ickstadt.  He graduated from Chippewa High School in 1945. Upon graduation, he served one and ½ years in the Navy aboard the USS Chara and the USS Parikutin. He entered the Wisconsin State College at Eau Claire in 1947 and graduated from that school in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences, Phy. Ed/Secondary Education. He attended the University of Southern California graduate school in 1952. During the school years of 1951-52, he taught and coached at New Auburn High School.

Donald married Anita F. Jackson on May 8, 1954 at Faith Lutheran Church in Fond du Lac.

He accepted a position in January of 1953 as an interviewer with the Wisconsin State Employment Service assigned to the Fond du Lac district office where he was stationed until he was promoted and transferred to the Waukesha district office. During his tour of duty at the Waukesha office, he was awarded the State Merit award by the Wisconsin Chapter of the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security for outstanding employment service work in Wisconsin.

He was appointed manager of the WSES district office at Beaver Dam in 1959 where he served until 1961. He was then promoted and transferred to the Racine District office as District Manager.

On January 1, 1963 Don was transferred to the Eau Claire District Office where he served until January 1985. He was appointed as the Northwest Regional Director for Job Service in charge of all Job Service operations in a 33 county area in Northwest Wisconsin with his headquarters in Eau Claire.

He retired from the State Agency July 17th, 1987. Don was active in various community organizations and received numerous awards from public and private organizations for his work in the community.  He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and associate member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Lehigh Acres, FL.

He was past president, Wisconsin Chapter International Association of Personnel in Employment Security; past chairman of the board, Eau Claire United Fund, Inc.; past chairman State of Wisconsin Employment Advisory Committee; past chairman West Central Area Manpower Planning Board.

He was a contributor: The Center for Rural Manpower and Public Affairs-Michigan State University Conference-“Labor Market Information in Rural Areas” published May 1972 proceedings. Don was a member of various advisory committees on employment and unemployment and related issues and was elected to and member of Eau Claire Board of Education 1970-1982.

Survivors include: his wife; three sons, George (Bonita) of Eleva, William (Kathleen) of Valparaiso, IN, and James (Jean) of Woodbury, MN; two daughters, Susan of Madison, and Joanne of Colorado Springs, CO; sister-in-law, Mary of Kent, WA; two grandchildren, Alicia Ickstadt and Matthew Ickstadt; and nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Arthur.

Funeral services will take place at 11 am on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 1915 Hogeboom Avenue, Eau Claire, WI 54701. Pastor Steven D. Rutter will officiate. Committal service will take place Thursday afternoon at 1:30 pm at Forest Hill Cemetery in Chippewa Falls with Military Honors being rendered by American Legion Post #53. Visitation will take place Wednesday evening at Fuller Speckien Hulke Funeral Home from 4-7 pm and at the church Thursday morning from 10 am until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Donald's name to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society, or the Alzheimer's Association.

Visitation will take place at Fuller Speckien Hulke Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, October 2, 2013 from 4-7 pm and at the church Thursday morning from 10 am until the time of service.


Funeral service will take place at 11 am on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church with Pastor Steven D. Rutter officiating.
