James "Jim" R. Bowman

James "Jim" R. Bowman

December 12, 2017

James “Jim” Bowman entered his eternal home on Tuesday, December 12, 2017.  He was the son of Algot “Peg” and Lorraine (Grinsel) Bowman and was born on March 6, 1935 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  On December 27, 1954 he married his high school sweetheart Helen “Jean” Stooldryer at St. James Parish in Eau Claire.  They celebrated their 62nd anniversary December 27, 2016.  Jim and Jean are long-term members of Immaculate Conception Church.

Jim graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School in 1953 where he was active in athletics and speech activities.  In 2006 he was inducted into the Old Abe Athletic Hall of Fame.

Jim joined the U.S. Army Security Agency December 1, 1953 and was discharged on September 3, 1956.  At the time of his discharge Sgt. Bowman was an electronics-communication instructor at the ASA School at Fort Devens, Massachusets.  He was a member of the 1954 Fort Deven's track team.

In June of 1959 he graduated from UW-Eau Claire (B.S. Cum Laude) in Secondary Education with majors in history and social studies.  He was a member of the 1956 conference championship football team.  He received a M.S. degree in guidance from UW-Stout in 1964.  Jim did additional graduate work in guidance, psychology, and administration at several universities including UW-Superior, UW-Stout and the University of Montana.

During his 31-year career (26 in Eau Claire) in education he served as a teacher, counselor and administrator.  At the time of his retirement in 1990 he was an assistant principal at Memorial High School.  In the 1970's Jim was active in the statewide career education movement.  He organized and helped conduct workshops throughout the state in coordination with UW-Stout and the DPI.  He served on numerous NCA and NCATE evaluation committees.

Jim taught CCD classes in the 1960's and 1970's.  He was president of the North High PTA in 1972-1973 school year.  He was a past member of the Eau Claire Rotary Club.  He served on the board of directors of the Camp Fire Girls and Sunburst Homes.

After retirement Jim and Jean spent considerable time in Colorado, Texas and Florida.  His favorite places to visit were Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Custer State Park in South Dakota.  They owned a cabin in Estes Park, Colorado for several years.  Family and friends have many happy memories of spending time with Jim and Jean at the Colorado cabin. Jim enjoyed traveling, viewing wildlife, reading (history, current events and religion), Tuesday morning breakfast with Memorial retirees, watching sports at all levels, and most of all, just being with family and friends.

In his early 60’s he was diagnosed with a neuro-muscular condition.  Despite this condition he continued to enjoy life with family and friends with Jean as his caregiver.

Faith, family, and friends were always the most important parts of his life.  He is survived by his wife Jean, son Jeff (Mary) of Sugarland, Texas, daughters Jackie (Tom) Borsheim of Eau Claire, Judy (Bob) Shugarts of Eau Claire, Jeannie (Steve) Eckley of Eau Claire.  He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Michelle (Trevor) Wilson, Ryan (Tami) Peterson, Adam (Maeve) Peterson, Bobby Shugarts, Kristi (Johnathan) Reyna, Emily (Jonathan) Niemi, and step-grandchildren Lindsey and Kelsey Borsheim.  Much joy was brought to Jim by time spent with his great-grandchildren Carli, Parker and Lainey Wilson, Dylan and Isabella Peterson, Imogen Peterson, Gavin Reyna and Matthias Niemi.  He is also survived by his sister Ellen (Paul) Smith, his brother George (Barb) Bowman and numerous extended family members.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family of Jim Bowman would like to thank the Mayo Clinic hospice team along with those caring for him in his final days at River Pines.
