Thomas E. Miland

Thomas E. Miland

November 8, 2017

Thomas Edwin Miland, age 83, of Eau Claire (formerly of Eleva), passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health System - Eau Claire.

Tom was born March 21, 1934, to Thomas and Edna (Helwig) Miland. He graduated from Eleve-Strum high school in 1953 and farmed in that area for a majority of his life. On February 27, 1960, he married Violet Marek.

Tom was genuine, quiet man, a peacemaker loved by all who knew him. Tom had a progressive, creative approach to farming. He had great insight and leadership abilities and never hesitated to try new, innovative methods, such as installing one of the first irrigation systems in the area. He was a director of the Eau Claire Farm Supply and Farm Bureau for 23 years.

Tom had diabetes for 55 years which, in later years resulted in legal blindness, but that didn't hinder him from continuing his work and love of land conservation. He was a true steward of the soil, who loved to plant trees and watch them grow. In 1979, a tornado took out 25 acres of his beloved trees, so guess what - Tom just planted some more! When he retired, in spite of his blindness and with his beloved wife Vi by his side, he built a log cabin on his farm using lumber from trees he had planted during his high school years. Many fond memories were made hosting family and friends at his wonderful creation.

A faithful, dependable husband, family member, and friend, Tom set an excellent example for younger family members with his steady approach to life, sense of humor, and kindness. He loved being with people and they enjoyed being with him. He enjoyed many club activities and was also an avid hunter. Right now, Tom is probably playing cards with his old friends, plotting on how to make his "ten bid"!

Tom was a truly GOOD man, who will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Violet; sisters, Palma Odegard of Minot, North Dakota, Betty (David) Myren of Eleva; Sister-in-laws, Marilyn Miland of Appleton, Stella (Skip) Auchterlonie of Dover, Deleware, Rita Hargot of Oregon, WI, Beatrice Malinowski of Bloomer; and several nieces and nephews.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Lawrence (Larry) Miland, brother-in-laws: Alan Odegard and James Malinowski.
