Daniel Coyne Callaghan, Sr.

October 22, 2017

In loving memory of Daniel Coyne Callaghan, Sr.

Born October 27, 1921, Chicago, IL; died October 22, 2017, Eau Claire, WI.

Coyne graduated from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1944.  While there he helped found the Naval ROTC program and he was Battalion Commander of the V-12 Navy College Training Program.  From 1944 through the end of World War II, he served on the USS Makin Island aircraft carrier as Chief Gunnery Officer in the battles of Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.  He then returned to Chicago where he earned his Masters Degree in Business Administration at the University of Chicago in 1947.

He married Martha Cecile Hayes Callaghan on June 28, 1947, at Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago, IL. She preceded him in death on February 3, 2010.  He was the loving son of Mae Lorrette Coyne Callaghan (dec.) and Thomas Andrew Callaghan (dec.) of Chicago, IL. He was the beloved brother of Thomas Andrew Callaghan (dec.), Mary Francis “Honey” (Roger) Mulcahy (dec.), Martin Thomas Callaghan (dec.) and Florence “Corky” (Dick) Hyland (dec.). He was the beloved father of Martin Thomas (Marla) Callaghan, Margaret Elizabeth (Paul) Wittig, D. Coyne Callaghan, Jr, Mary Loretta (Bob) Duffy, Edward Hayes Callaghan, Thomas Andrew (Kathleen) Callaghan, Martha Cecile (Paul) Weise, Julie Catherine (Bob) Nelson, William Joseph (Laurel) Callaghan, James Michael Callaghan, John Patrick (Marianne) Callaghan; and the grandfather of 39 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Coyne, Dad, "Dadzo" was a wonderful husband and steady support to his wife and girlfriend of 63 years, Martha, “Massa.” He was an exemplary father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his loving and grateful family and their friends. His devotion to Mom, to his family and the family business was complete and enduring. Speaking of family business, he began the business in 1960 at age 38 with eight children under 12 years old.  He thought it was the right thing to do to allow him to spend more time with his family.  Martha was the office manager, “chief cook and bottle-washer” was the title she preferred over the years.  Five of his sons still operate the business.  Throughout his life he relied on prayer, personality and humor to find his way.  He loved the uniqueness and promise of each member of his family and they are all the stronger for his influence.
