Gloria Donaldson

September 24, 2017

(Marilyn) Gloria Donaldson, 92, formerly of Eau Claire, town of Union, passed away with her family surrounding her on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at Colfax Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born November 30, 1924 in Minneapolis, MN to Robert and Cora (Lundquist) Butter.  She grew up in South Minneapolis and attended area schools.  She was a graduate of the University of Minnesota in 1947.  She belonged to a sorority and her friends developed a Round Robin letter that still circulates today.  She had a strong influence from a book, Art in Everyday Life written by sisters Harriet and Vetta Goldstein.  She studied under these sisters and her art interest flourished.  Her art talent was recognized early in her life.  She graciously shared her paintings with others.

Gloria married Robert Donaldson on September 28, 1947.  They raised their four children on a farm in the Town of Union.  Several things brought her joy, but being a Mom was a priority. Her primary career was being a homemaker, however she enjoyed other jobs including being hired to draw 750 illustrations that were published and used as teaching tools for children with disabilities.

She enjoyed spending time with friends, collecting dolls, genealogy, and traveling.  She especially enjoyed her trips to Scotland with Diane and Norway with Jan.  She was able to see the countries of her heritage.

Gloria was an extremely talented seamstress.  She created many clothing designs including wedding and attendant dresses.  She sewed her own wedding dress.

Gloria was a strong Christian woman.  She led workshops and Bible studies along with teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.  She was the second chairman of the Christian Women’s Club around 1966.  Her spiritual and prayer life were the fabric of her soul.  She had a deep love for Jesus, her family, and her friends.  She will be greatly missed.

Gloria is survived by her four children; Diane (Bob) Long, Bruce (Bridget) Donaldson, Mark (Deanna) Donaldson, Jan (Tony Hotujec) Andresen; Grandchildren; Shane (Kristi Willert) Long, Andrea Long, Mike (Lucretia Navratil) Donaldson, Nola (Casey Kelly) Donaldson, Jessica (Ignacio Moreno) Johnson, Chris Andresen, Erin (Dustin Hahn) Andresen; Great grandchildren Maia, Jack, Andrea, Kyra, Zeke, Koby, Corbin, Kylee, Ryan.  She is also survived by her nieces and other relatives and friends.

Gloria was proceeded in death by her parents; husband Bob; sister-in-law Kathryn (Hubbard) Robbins; son-in-law Wayne Andresen; other family members and friends.

With gratitude, our family would like to thank all staff and volunteers at Colfax Health and Rehabilitation Center for their genuine compassion, care and kindness shown to Gloria since 2013.  She was treated as family there.  The staff consistently complimented her about her beauty and thankful attitude.  Her smile was welcoming to all!

A quote that guided her later in life was “I can’t say I ever resented growing old.  When I get up each morning, I deliberately choose to be happy.  You have no idea how effective that is.”-Thomas W. Samuels.
