Joyce M. Olson

Joyce M. Olson

June 15, 2017

Joyce Mae Olson, age 84 of Eau Claire, (formerly Birchwood, WI and White Bear Lake, MN) lived a full and wonderful life up to the day of her peaceful death on June 15, 2017, surrounded by family. She was born November 13, 1932, to Dorothy Sherwood and Julien Harvey.  Joyce grew up in Minneapolis as an only child, raised by her mother and maternal grandparents.  As a child, she spent many summers at her grandparents’ resort in western Minnesota.  After graduation she went to work, and a co-worker set her up on a blind date.  She soon fell in love with the young man, John Olson.  They married and moved to San Diego while John served in the Korean War.  After the war, they moved back to the Twin Cities and had three boys.  In 1963, they moved closer to family in Eau Claire where they built a home, raised their family, and met new friends. Joyce and John spent many summers camping with their boys in various locations throughout the United States.

They purchased land on Red Cedar Lake, where for the next 40 years they created many happy family memories boating, snowmobiling, and socializing. At “The Lake” they built their home on the land they loved while enjoying their friends and family, who were always welcome to come up and pitch in on the current project.

Joyce took great pride in being a homemaker and was a loving wife and mother.  She enjoyed dinner parties and entertaining.  She could sit with complete strangers, strike up a conversation and be laughing with them minutes later, as evidenced by her successful career selling Avon. Throughout their 62 years of marriage, Joyce enjoyed traveling with her husband and seeing the world.

After John passed away in 2015, she moved into the Oakwood Hills Retirement Community in Eau Claire. While there, she enjoyed the companionship of many new friends. She frequently told her family how much she loved living there.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband John, mother Dorothy, grandchildren Nicholas and Aubrey.  She will be greatly missed by her children Mark (Terri), Bruce (Cindy) and Paul (Yvonne), cousins Marion (Tom) Twaites and Katherine (Richard) Henry, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Lucy (Donald) Walker, Gerald (Bonnie) Olson, Maryann (Roger) Biesterveld, and Edythe Olson, her grandchildren, Victoria, Michael, Brittney, Tony, Tammy and Shelly, 3 great-grandchildren, and many other family and friends.
