Bret A. Kohlhepp

March 22, 2017

Bret Allen Kohlhepp, 56, passed away March 22, 2017 after complications from a spinal cord injury.

Bret was born on July 12, 1960, the son of Karen Tweet-Kohlhepp and Nyles "Nub" Kohlhepp. He grew up on a farm in the Town of Union participating in 4H showing cattle, wrestling, playing football, and rugby.  He went on to play fast pitch and slow pitch softball.  Later in life, he was a referee for wrestling and coached the UWEC Girls Rugby team.  Through his coaching of his girls, he created an extended family.  Throughout his time working for the City of Eau Claire, he was active in AFSMCE, including a position on the Executive Board of Council 40.

On St. Patrick's Day in 1993, Bret met his other half, Denise Kohlhepp who became his wife in 2003.  They spent their first years like teenagers getting to know each other and enjoying life.  Bret had spent most of his life on the water on the chains of lakes in Chetek at the Kohlhepp family cabin boating.  His love for one of his favorite spots, led to eventually  to building a house with Denise on the same chain of Lakes.  Many of their vacations were spent traveling throughout the United States or attending music festivals and concerts.

Bret's greatest love was for his family.  Whether born or "adopted" into the Kohlhepp family, you are family for life.  He loved spending time with all of his aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins.  Bret was so proud of his nieces and nephews, Jessica, Joshua, Brynne, and Mason, his great nephew Cooper and his grandkids, Alec and Payton.  He was also an avid fan of the Memorial Old Abes, Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Wisconsin Badgers and would not miss a game.  Bret enjoyed camping with Denise at Crystal Lake with a large group of friends and family.

Bret is survived by his wife, Denise, brothers, Mark (Kerry) Kohlhepp, Kent Kohlhepp; sister, Kelly (Rick) Mickelson; step-daughter, Andrea (Cory) Tomac; nieces, Jessica Kohlhepp, Brynne Mickelson; nephews, Joshua Kohlhepp, Mason Mickelson; grandchildren, Alec Tomac, Payton Tomac; great nephew Cooper Winger; many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
