Donald E. Berman

Donald E. Berman

March 21, 2017

Donald “Don” E. Berman, 87, of Elk Creek Lake, WI, went to be with his Lord on March 21, 2017.

Don was born on September 9, 1929, in Eau Claire. He grew up in Eau Claire and as a teenager he moved to Bloomer to work on a farm. He attended Colfax High School and graduated in 1948. After graduation, Don enlisted in the Air Force and became a Load Master. He married Mary Engelbrecht on August 30, 1952 and together they had four children. While in the Air Force, Don participated in many flights during the Vietnam War. After 20 years in the Air Force, he retired as a Master Sergeant, and during those years he received, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Award, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship award, just to name a few. Don moved from South Carolina back to his home state of Wisconsin, where he settled down in the town of Elk Creek Lake to raise his family with Mary.

Don was employed with the Eau Claire Postal Service for 20 years as a postal carrier until he retired in 1988.

Don loved working with his hands and doing projects on his own, and in doing so, he built his own home. He always had a passion for gardening and he would plant more vegetables than he could ever need, and then he would give them away to family and friends. Don made sure he always planted plenty of corn so he could have his annual summer corn feed where he invited his family and friends.

He also enjoyed the game of horse shoes. He played on a league for the Sunbeam Bar in Chippewa Falls. Don thoroughly enjoyed a game of golf as well. He had his own outdoor wood stove and you could find him in the woods cutting up the fallen trees and cutting down the diseased ones as well. Don also liked to play Pinochle. He could remember how many cards were played and he counted the points he had all the while he played.

Don’s greatest passion was the raising of his honey bees and being a mentor to other up and coming apiarists from the Dunn County Beekeepers Association. His other passion was collecting the sap from his maple trees and boiling the sap down to make maple syrup. When Don wasn’t busy, he and his wife, Mary, would travel out west, to Florida and to Alaska.

He always loved helping people out, and one way of doing this was volunteering his time every Friday at St. Francis Pantry in Eau Claire. He also volunteered at his local church in Elk Mound, which he had been doing since he moved back to Wisconsin.

Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary; son Wayne (Mari); daughters Dawn (Rick); Lydia (Danny), and son, Anthony (Rita). He has nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Don is preceded in death by his father, William Berman, mother Marie (Kummel) Berman; brothers David, Jim, Herb and William Berman.
