Wilfred “Willie” F. Novak, age 84, of Eau Claire passed away Saturday morning, January 21, 2017 at Dove Healthcare – West in Eau Claire.

Wilfred was born on Dec. 2, 1932 to Edward J. and Georgina (Paul) Novak of Rice Lake, WI, and passed away on Jan. 21, 2017 in Eau Claire, WI.

He grew up in rural Haugen, Wisconsin and graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1950.  Willie apprenticed as an agent with the railroad in various stations in northern Wisconsin.  In 1953 he married Patricia Subrt, and they moved to Georgia, where Willie trained in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.  He was stationed with the 101st Signal Company, 7th Army Division in the Korean Theater until his discharge in 1955.

Willie worked for the Chicago & Northwestern Railway from 1951-1966 as a telegrapher.  He then started a new career as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Eau Claire, WI.  He delivered mail and greeted customers for 26 years, retiring in 1992.

After retirement, Willie enjoyed volunteer work at the Haugen Area Historical Museum/Ceska Opera Foundation with his wife, Patricia, where he served as vice president and board member.  He crafted mannequins, framed display items and enjoyed sharing local history with museum visitors.  Willie had a great sense of humor.  His times fishing at the lake with his grandsons and son-in-law, Jeff, were among his happy times. Willie treasured his wife, Patricia and his family.  He is missed.

Willie was a member of Ceska Opera Foundation, Haugen, WI; American Legion Post 540 Haugen, WI; Western Fraternal Life Association (WFLA); National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFF) and National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC).

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter Laurel (Jeff) Rabe of Minnetonka, MN; grandsons Nathan (Cathy) Rabe of Rochester, MN and Elliott Rabe of Savage, MN; great-grandchildren Franklin Jeffrey Rabe and Greta Patricia Rabe, of Rochester, MN; sister-in-law June Novak of Menomonie, WI.  He is predeceased by his parents, Edward and Georgina Novak and brother, Eugene Novak.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Ceska Opera Foundation, P.O. Box 211, Haugen, WI, 54841.

Funeral services will take place at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Fuller Speckien Hulke Funeral Home in Eau Claire, Robert Heinze will officiate. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the time of services. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date in the Bohemian National Cemetery in Haugen, Wisconsin. Military honors will be rendered by American Legion Post #540.
