Rev. Theodore C. Nystuen, age 94 of Altoona, died Thursday, January 19, 2017 at River Pines Nursing Home in Altoona, WI.

Ted Nystuen was born on February 17, 1922, the third child of Caleb and Thea (Svendsen) Nystuen in Northfield, Minnesota.  Ted was baptized May 21, 1922 at home by his uncle, Rev. Joseph Nystuen and confirmed his faith in Bethel Lutheran Free Church, Northfield.

As a child, Ted attended Lyman Country School through grade8, then attended Northfield High School graduating in 1940.  He was drafted into the Army in 1942 and served through 1945 in the Army Air Corp in the China/Burma Theatre at a base in China.

Following his years in the service, he attended Augsburg College graduating in 1949 and Augsburg Theological Seminary in 1952.  Ted was ordained in his home congregation, Bethel Lutheran in 1952.

He married Meredith Foss on December 27, 1950 in Minot, ND.  To this union, 3 daughters were born: Rebecca, Pamela and Nancy.  Meredith died in 1963.  On September 26, 1964, he married Ardis Dorr in Minneapolis, MN. 

During Ted’s ministry he served the following congregations: First Lutheran, CathlametWA, Faith Lutheran in Madelia, MN, First Lutheran in L’Anse, MI and St. James-Trinity in Fall Creek, WI.

Ted retired from active ministry in 1987.  During his retirement years, he enjoyed serving as an interim pastor and volunteer hospital chaplain.  Other joys during retirement were woodworking and travel, both stateside and Europe, Scandinavia, Israel, China and Spain.

Ted is survived by his wife, Ardy, 3 daughters, Becca (Tom) Berger, Green Bay, Pam (Tim) Brodkorb, Sioux Falls, Nancy Nystuen (Ann Whittemore), Burnsville, and 2 granddaughters, Andrea Brodkorb and Berit Brodkorb (Chris Shamp) both of Mankato.  He is survived by one brother, Dave (Pru) Nystuen of Lakeville, MN and one sister-in-law, Mary Nystuen of Northfield, MN as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Meredith, brothers Mark (Marge) Nystuen, Paul Nystuen, sisters Dorothy (Jim) Ostlie, Ruth Nystuen and infant sister, Alice, sister-in-law, Vi Nystuen and brother-in-law Bud Foss.

A celebration of Ted’s life will take place at 11 am on Monday, January 23, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1314 E. Lexington Blvd., Eau Claire, WI 54701 with Pastor Brahm Semmler Smith and Pastor Dave Whelan officiating.  Visitation will take place Monday morning at the church from 10 am until the time of service.  Burial will take place in the Trinity Cemetery in Fall Creek, WI following the funeral luncheon.

Visitation will take place at the church on Monday morning an hour prior to the service.

Funeral Service will take place at 11 am on Monday, January 23, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Eau Claire with Pastor Brahm Semmler Smith officiating.
