Ethel M. Nelson

November 14, 2016

Ethel M. (Hasart) Nelson, age 81, of Eau Claire passed away at home November 14th, 2016.

Ethel was born July 8th, 1935 in Ree Heights, South Dakota to Jacob and Carrie Hasart.  Her family moved to Wisconsin and settled on a farm in rural Eau Claire where she grew up.  She graduated from Eau Claire High School.  While working in the Eau Claire County Courthouse, she met Harlan Nelson; they married September 7th, 1957.

Ethel was a dedicated wife and mother, and took great joy watching her children and grandchildren’s many activities.  She and Harlan enjoyed sight-seeing trips throughout the US and abroad.  They especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She remained close to her siblings her entire life and treasured the time spent at reunions, holidays, and special events, including monthly gatherings of Harlan’s nieces and nephews.  She enjoyed spending time with friends including her over 50 year friendship with fellow “Card Club ladies”.

Ethel held elected positions with the Town of Seymour, and worked many years as a crossing guard and playground supervisor at McKinley elementary school.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed many interests, including gardening, quilting, sewing, fishing, puzzles, and viewing wildlife and birds from her home.  She was an avid volunteer - coaching and organizing Seymour girls’ softball.  She was a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and elementary school classroom volunteer.

Ethel remained strong in her Christian faith throughout her life, and was a long-time member of Lake Street United Methodist Church, where she and Harlan volunteered.  She loved her Church family and felt blessed for the support and friendships developed over the years.

Ethel is survived by three children, Ann Bechard of Osseo, Mark (Cindy) Nelson of Poulsbo, WA, Joan (John) Rolbiecki of Delavan; grandchildren Adam Bechard, Laura Bechard, and Brandon Rolbiecki; siblings Neva Robbins, Harold (Sherry) Hasart, Ina (George) Myers, Vera (Larry) Kittilstad, Doris Valerio, Irma (Larry) Shepler, LaVern (Marge) Hasart, Diane (Tom) Bibeau, and Harvey Hasart.  Step-brothers Dale (Marilyn) Soden; David Soden; and step sister Donna Polus.

Ethel is preceded in death by her husband, Harlan; parents; brothers Dean Hasart, Leslie Hasart, and Alvin Hasart.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Eau Claire Mayo Cancer Center for the loving and kind care and support Ethel received over the past two years – as well as generous blood bank donors.
