Leon F. Etten

Leon F. Etten

October 25, 2016

Leon F. Etten, 79, of Eau Claire died Tuesday, October 25 at Dove Healthcare in Eau Claire.

Leon was born August 24, 1937 in the township of Wilson, Wisconsin to Albert (Tab) and Leone Etten.  He was a graduate of Stanley High School and brought his love of sports to Eau Claire as a member of the UWEC Blugold Men’s Basketball Team.

Leon grew up in Edson where his parents owned a tavern. With hard work instilled in him from early on, Leon spent nearly 59 years behind the bar at Wagner’s. Although it was a job, Leon truly never felt like he was working as he enjoyed talking and getting to know people which turned out to be great friendships that he would always cherish. Leon was also a Sales Rep starting at Triangle Sporting Goods, Badger Sporting Goods,  Jostens and Liggett and Myers Tobacco and finally at U.S. Tobacco until his retirement from sales.

While Leon lived in Eau Claire for over 60 years, his cabin at Lake Eau Claire in Augusta was really his home. Leon loved going to his cabin where he spent many hours fixing it up, but when the work was done, a deck of cards always appeared. Those that knew Leon truly realized his passion for playing cards and witnessed his competitive spirit. That spirit was passed on to his children and to his grandchildren.

Leon is survived by his three sons, Kirk (Teri) Etten of Lexington, KY, Randy (Sherry) Etten of Green Bay, WI, and Jeff (Irene) Etten of Wellington, FL; seven grandchildren, Zach, Ben, and Cole Etten (Kirk and Teri), Ryan and Megan Etten (Randy and Sherry), and Tyler and Cam Etten (Jeff and Irene); and sister Donna Mae (Alvin) Berres and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Leone Etten and sister Darlys Bremness.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Leon’s name to the American Heart Association, National Center, 7272 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75231.
