Frederick C. Urmann

Frederick C. Urmann

April 30, 2015

Fred passed away on April 30th 2015, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 77. Fred was born on November 4, 1937, in St. Paul, MN to Adolph and Theresa (Millner) Urmann.

Fred grew up near Rice Street in St. Paul. He attended St. Bernard grade school, Cretin High School and spent one year at the College of St Thomas, before getting married and entering the workforce.

In 1960 Fred married Patricia (Pat) M Reilly. They went on to have four children.

In 1960 Fred started working for State Farm in Roseville, MN at the regional office; in 1965 he moved his family to Eau Claire to start as a State Farm agent. In 1985 he became a manager and retired at age 58 after 35 years with State Farm.

Fred donated his time to various causes. He was a board member of the YMCA, The Boys and Girls Club, Eau Claire Library, Sacred Heart Hospital among others. He was deeply involved in Eau Claire's Catholic Schools; as a member of the Regis Foundation and Case Schools. He was a longtime member of the Newman Parish; he served as their finance director and a lector. He was a regular attendee of the weekday Mass at Immaculate Conception.  Fred was a deeply faith-filled man.

Fred spent his retirement finishing his college degree at UWEC/English; flying his plane; reading; traveling to see friends, children and grandchildren. After weekday Mass, he went to the YMCA, then coffee with his buddies. For over thirty years, he loved getting together on Thursday nights with his dearest friends to play cards and have a few laughs. Fred was a character, who loved to tease, loved a good joke and loved laughter. He especially loved it when his buddies would tease him. His “smirk” will be missed by all that knew him.

Fred had an adventurous nature and enjoyed getting the most out of life. In his younger days, he canoed in Canada, got his pilot’s license, and took sailing lessons. He loved air shows. He was very well read and continued reading and studying philosophy and mathematics till the end. He loved cards, chess & talking politics.

Fred leaves behind Pat, his wife of 55 years, and their four children and their spouses, Paul (Beth) of Green Bay, WI., Charles (Barb) of Madison, WI., Kevin (Elisabeth) of Tomahawk, WI., Kathleen (Scott) Knight of Chaska, MN., 10 grandchildren, a brother William (Jackie) and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jerome; and two grandchildren, Stephen and Benjamin.

The family would like to thank all his dear friends for their visits, thoughts & prayers: his old buddies from Minnesota; his friends from the YMCA; his Thursday night card buddies; as well as his former associates from State Farm and many others. To all the staff at SyversonNursing Home and St Croix Hospice, a special thank you from the family. Especially the RN’s & CNA’s for the outstanding care given to Fred. An extra special thank you to Shayla, from St Croix Hospice, whose care and compassion gave dad and the family, the strength needed through this trying time, and for keeping dad at peace and pain free during his long battle. Fred was truly appreciative of everyone’s efforts and became quite fond of all of you. The family is deeply grateful to all.

Fred truly believed in Jesus Christ and eternity. He will be sorely missed by his family, but we all believe he is in a better place and that gives us the peace to move on.
