Lorayne H. Kleven, age 95, of Eau Claire passed away on Monday, May 23, 2011 at her home.

Lorayne was born on January 15, 1916 to the late Ole and Emma (Helwig) Hanson in the Town of Garden Valley, Wisconsin. She graduated from Whitehall High School in 1933. After graduating from Black River Falls Teacher's Training School she then attended LaCrosse State Teacher's College (now UW-LaCrosse). Lorayne taught in the Jackson County public schools for several years. On May 17, 1941 (the Norwegian holiday Syttende Mai), she married John A. Kleven and they resided in Black River Falls.

When John resigned as Sheriff of Jackson County to enter the Navy during WWII, Governor Heil appointed Lorayne as Sheriff to serve out the remainder of her husband's term - the only woman to serve as Sheriff of Jackson County. She later carried on in the county law enforcement staff as deputy sheriff.

In August of 1949, they moved their family to Eau Claire. It is here Lorayne became very active as a member of Hope Lutheran Church. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons, Erik, Rolf (Barbara) and Arne (Christine) Kleven all of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Wendy (Will) House, John R. (Melissa), Joel (Diana), Daniel (Ellen), Anna (Kevin) Misner, Katie, Micah, Maria Lorayne, and Josiah; great grandchildren, Joshua, Christopher, Lauren, Evelyn, and Karissa; sister, Doris Bell; brother, Robert (Mavis) Hanson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; sister, Nola (William) Lien; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Eline (Omer "Tiger") Stendahl, Willis (Janet) Kleven, and Kenneth Bell.


Visitation: 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home and also one hour prior to service at church


Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 27, 2011 at Hope Lutheran Church (corner of Starr Avenue and Eddy Lane) with Reverend Randy Olson officiating
